A provincial police‑led crime prevention operation has resulted in the arrest of 307 suspects across Limpopo Province during a week‑long crackdown targeting serious and violent crime.

The intensified Operation Shanela, conducted between 24 and 31 May, was carried out across all five districts of the province, with high‑density deployments focused on the Sekhukhune and Mopani districts.

According to police, the arrests included suspects linked to murder, robbery, rape, assault, drug‑related offences, illegal possession of firearms, burglaries, illegal liquor trading and immigration violations.

Among those arrested were four suspects for murder, five for rape, four for robbery with aggravating circumstances, 41 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, 16 for possession of drugs, seven for dealing in drugs, and 61 undocumented migrants.

Police also confiscated a range of items allegedly connected to criminal activities, including two firearms, 38 rounds of ammunition, 18 dangerous weapons, more than 5.2kg of dagga, crystal methamphetamine, cash, cellphones and tobacco products.

As part of the operation, officers inspected 1,443 liquor outlets, 193 second‑hand goods dealers and 6,084 informal businesses, including spaza shops, to monitor compliance with labour and other regulations. A total of 23 unlicensed liquor premises were shut down.

Police further reported searching 7,701 individuals and 4,951 vehicles during the operation.

Authorities said some of the suspects have already appeared before various magistrates’ courts across Limpopo, while others are expected to appear in the coming days.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the South African Police Service to combat crime and improve community safety across the province.
