Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume has called for urgent investment in the city's health infrastructure, saying municipal clinics are outdated and require significant upgrades to meet modern healthcare standards.

Speaking during a recent full council meeting, Mafume said several health projects remain incomplete, leaving the city struggling to provide services in facilities that are falling behind contemporary expectations.

He said the refurbishment work undertaken at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals should serve as a model for the City of Harare's own healthcare institutions.

"The work that was done at Parirenyatwa was excellent, and I think we need to follow suit with our clinics and facilities so that they join the modern age in terms of computerisation, ambience and other key standards, so that we do not fall behind," Mafume said.

The mayor stressed that upgrading clinics should not only focus on physical infrastructure but also on adopting modern technologies and improving service delivery systems.

He further urged council to prioritise the completion of stalled health projects, particularly Wilkins Hospital, which has remained unfinished for years despite repeated assurances that construction is nearly complete.

"We need to follow suit and refurbish our facilities and, more importantly, finish the hospital at Wilkins, which has always been said to be 98 percent complete but is still not operational," he said.

The remarks come amid growing concerns over the condition of some council-run health facilities, many of which face challenges related to ageing infrastructure, equipment shortages and increasing demand for healthcare services.

Completion of Wilkins Hospital is expected to strengthen Harare's healthcare capacity, particularly in handling infectious diseases and easing pressure on existing public health institutions. Mafume's call signals renewed pressure on the local authority to accelerate investment in health infrastructure and ensure residents have access to modern, efficient medical facilities.
