A Shurugwi man stole eight crates of Savanna premium ciders from his brother's workplace in order to "cure" his heavy hangover, a Gweru magistrate heard.

Last Mhuri told Ms Sithembiso Ncube that he stole the beer in order to cure his heavy hangover.

Mhuri who was convicted on his own plea, was sentenced to three years in prison.

He will however serve an effective 18 month in prison after 12 months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour and another six months were suspended on condition that Mhuri pays a restitution of $82 to the owner of Takakeni bar, Mr Martin Makanza.

For the State, Mr Justos Makwena said on 9 February, Mhuri visited his brother, Mr  Kurauone Mhuri who is employed at Takakeni Yellow Gate bar in Gweru as a caretaker.

Mr Makwena said Mhuri was on his way to Harare when he made a stopover in Gweru to see his brother. His brother invited him to his home, a single-room which is situated behind the bar.

Mr Makwena said next to the room where the Mhuri brothers slept, is a storeroom where Mr Makanza keeps the beers.

He said instead of going to Harare the next day as per his plans, Mhuri decided to spend the weekend in Gweru.

The court heard that while in the room, Mhuri would insert his hand through an opening at the door that divided the caretaker's room and the storeroom where he would unlawfully help himself to some Savanna ciders.

He said Mhuri took eight cases of ciders which contained six by 330ml bottles of Savanna Premium ciders.

Mhuri sold himself out by giving some of the ciders to patrons at the bar.
