President Robert Mugabe is back home from Maseru, Lesotho where he attended the 50th birthday celebrations of King Letsie III.
President Mugabe was welcomed at the Harare International Airport on Wednesday evening by Vice President Joice Mujuru; the Minister of State Security, Sydney Sekeramayi; the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda and other top government officials.
While in Maseru, Mugabe joined other leaders from the region in celebrating the 50th birthday of King Letsie III.
Among the leaders present were King Mswati III of Swaziland, Seretse Khama of Botswana, Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia and Zambian Vice President Guy Scott.
In his address during the celebrations held at the Sesuthu stadium, King Letsie III paid tribute to President Robert Mugabe for setting aside his election campaign schedule to celebrate his birthday, saying it demonstrates solidarity and friendship.
"We all know that for a politician, there is nothing so pressing as an election campaign. We also know that right now in Zimbabwe, politicians are busy campaigning for the much needed votes in hope of a favourable election outcome. However there is at least one Zimbabwean politician, who has left all that behind just for a day, to join us in these celebrations. I would like to say to that veteran politician, your Excellence, Robert Mugabe, your presence here is a sign of your enduring love for the Basotho. We all hope that the elections in Zimbabwe will be peaceful for the benefit of Zimbabweans and the region as a whole," said King Letsie.
King Letsie described Mugabe as a veteran politician and a principled leader.
Mugabe then briefed other leaders and heads of state and government at a banquet on the preparations of the harmonised elections, saying they are proceeding smoothly.
He saluted Lesotho for remaining resolute in supporting Zimbabwe in the liberation struggle despite pressure from the then apartheid South Africa.
