POLICE in Harare have impounded 178 more vehicles under an operation to curb rising armed robberies cases in and around the city.
This brings the total number of vehicles impounded since the launch of the operation code named "Batai Munhu" to 235.Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda yesterday said 11 of the impounded vehicles were linked to robberies committed recently in the city.
"The operation is ongoing and we want to ensure that crime is thwarted, particularly to do with criminals targeting commuters and offer them lifts before robbing them of their cash and valuables," he said.
Insp Chibanda said among the vehicles impounded were those that were picking up passengers at undesignated points, unmarked kombis and other private vehicles.
"We also urge the public to use clearly marked public transport vehicles and desist from using pirate taxis and private cars," he said.
Insp Chibanda said the operation was also targeting criminals, kombis and private vehicles used to commit robberies.
The operation launched last week also involves officials from the Central Vehicle Registry, Vehicle Inspection Department, city council and Zimbabwe National Road Administration.

The robbers target illegal pick up points that include Showgrounds, corner Leopold Takwarira Street and Herbert Chitepo, outside Roadport Bus Terminus along Robert Mugabe Street, at the National Social Security Authority Building at corner Sam Nujoma and Park Street and at Mbudzi Bus Stop.
