A CHINHOYI man is now bedridden, suffering swollen legs, stomach and private parts in a suspected case of juju commonly known as "runyoka". Wilson Mawa (41) of Godzi Primary School in Kenzamba under chief Magonde started experiencing pain and the swelling of body parts about a month ago in what he attributed to "locking" after he slept with a stranded woman.
"I gave a stranded woman somewhere to sleep after failing to get transport to her relative's home in Chikonohono. Then we agreed to be intimate," said a visibly ailing Mawa during an interview at his brother's house in Gadzema township yesterday.
Well-wishers had to ferry him in a cart to his brother's house last Wednesday afternoon after spending about a month in the open in Chinhoyi town near where he used to work as a security guard. Mawa said he started experiencing pain on his leg about four days after being intimate with the woman known only as Mercy for the second time.
"On the first day we agreed that I was going to give her US$4 after I indicated that I did not have the US$5 she was demanding. We became intimate," he said. However, they were to meet again after about two months as the woman is said to live in Karoi where she reportedly frequents bars and beerhalls.
Asked why he did not feel the same pain when they were intimate the first time he said he suspected that she must have met another man who promised to marry her and "locked" her during the time she away. "I have heard that she met a man who is suspected to be from Binga or Hurungwe who locked her after promising to marry her.
Mawa said he had gone to a prophet with an apostolic sect church in Alaska and was told that he had been locked. "I was given muteuro and warned to follow instructions or else I would die," he said. He also visited the hospital where he was told that he had a lot of fluid in his body but no further attention was extended to him.
Mawa has a swollen face, legs, stomach and his genitals are swollen. He said it started like a lump on on side of his ribs while he was asleep before it started spreading. "I felt like I was sleeping on a cushion before the lump started spreading," he said. The male organ is swollen on the base and forms a hook at the top.
"I now want to get at least US$20 to visit a traditional healer who is said to be able to heal such conditions. Money at the moment is problem and I would to appeal to well-wishers to help me," he said. A local doctor could only say the condition was rare.
