The Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union (ZCFU) has urged farmers to consider soya bean farming in the forthcoming summer season as part of efforts to increase crop production, ZBC News reported on Tuesday.
ZCFU Acting Director, Mr. Peter Gambara said the initiative is part of combined efforts by the national soya bean association to increase the production levels of the crop in the country.
Soya bean production in the country declined to 37 000 in 2010 from 141 000 tonnes in 2001.
As a result oil expressers and stock-feed are importing from as far as India.
The crop had also proved to be unpopular due to low producer prices ranging around 260 dollars per tonne.
The ZCFU said it would strive to ensure that soya bean producers get at least 500 dollars per tonne.
