Modelling is a profession looked down upon in the country and it is even worse when one is a male.
Traditionally, the industry is preserved for women, but that has not stopped Prosper Henry Moyo, who has since carved a niche for himself in South Africa's modelling industry, featuring in the country's top brands advertisements on television and in magazines.
Moyo is one of the most sought after models in South Africa, together with another Zimbabwean actor, Melgin Tafirenyika.
Moyo, a Plumtree-born model, has featured on several billboards in South Africa and adverts flighted in several African countries, among them Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana.
The model-cum-actor said the gods of fortune have smiled upon him.
"I started my modelling career in 2005 in Harare and left for South Africa in 2009 where I signed a contract with G3 Modelling Agency," he said.
"I have featured in adverts that have been flighted in Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Angola, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Zimbabwe and South Africa."
Moyo, who features in the Castle Milk Stout television advert often flighted during programming of South African dramas Isibaya and Zabalaza, says he owes the success to his height and pan-African face.
"My face is pan-African, which is why it features in adverts that are African, but I am hoping to feature in international adverts as time goes by," he said.
"I have also featured in adverts for the Africa Cup of Nations, Energade, Close-Up toothpaste, Capitas — a bank in Angola, MTN mobile network, Nedbank, Airlink, Edgars, True Love and Bride magazines, Kevro catalogue, as well as John Graig catalogue for a clothing label."
Moyo said the modelling industry has stiff competition and advised Zimbabwean models to work hard when preparing for castings.
"Some people tend to like the idea of being a model yet they do not put in the necessary work and preparations for castings, which often determines whether a model is chosen for a role or not," he said.
