A 46-YEAR-OLD Bulilima man struck his 17-year-old nephew with an iron rod on the head, killing him on the spot for using his scotch cart and leaving it with a punctured tyre.

Zamani Moyo, who stays in Tshukuluthu Village, Maitengwe area, is suspected to have fled to Botswana after killing Takemore Moyo (17), a Form Two pupil at Bambadzi Secondary School.

The incident happened on Saturday afternoon. A furious Zamani allegedly accosted Takemore with a Mopane switch and beat him up until he retaliated. The councillor for the area, Zoolakes Nyathi, said Takemore grabbed a brick and struck his uncle on the chest.

"Zamani armed himself with an iron rod and struck his nephew on the head resulting in his death," said Clr Nyathi. He said Takemore's grandmother, Ms Grace Mdlongwa, who was asleep in another room, was awakened by the noise of the scuffle.

Clr Nyathi said Ms Mdlongwa found her grandson lying on the ground and tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him. Zamani, the councillor said, fled from the homestead.

"Villagers teamed up in pursuit of Zamani but footprints showed that he had crossed into Botswana through an illegal entry point," said Clr Nyathi. He described the incident as a tragedy that had left community members shocked.

The councillor urged villagers to amicably solve disputes without using violence.
