Government through the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is seriously considering shutting down close to 40 schools in Matabeleland South Province which have low enrolment.
According to Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Dr Slyvia Utete-Masango "running schools which have low enrolment is not viable."
Some schools in the province are said to have a low enrolment of below 120 pupils at primary level and less than 140 scholars at secondary level, state controlled ZBC reported.
Insiza district has the highest number of schools with a low enrolment.
Zanu PF Insiza south legislator, Malachi Nkomo supports the idea of closing schools.
