A 12-year-old boy from Dombodema resettlement area in Bulilima District died when a donkey-drawn scotchcart he was travelling in hit a stump and overturned along the Dombodema-Plumtree road, police said yesterday.
The provincial police spokesperson for Matabeleland South, Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe, said the accident occurred on Sunday at about 9am at the 5km peg.
The scotchcart was heading towards Dombodema village.
"On the fateful day, the now deceased was travelling in a scotchcart driven by his 10-year-old cousin. It looks like on approaching the 5km peg, the boy failed to control the donkeys resulting in the cart veering off the road and it hit a stump and overturned," said Insp Dzirutwe.
"The boy who died was thrown out of the scotchcart, hit its edge and died on the spot due to injuries he sustained in the neck."
Insp Dzirutwe identified the dead boy as Gerald Dube. His body was taken to Plumtree Hospital for a post-mortem.
The dead boy's cousin escaped unhurt. The latest accident comes barely three months after a similar incident in which a 90-year-old woman from Silalatshani in Insiza was fatally hit by a donkey-drawn scotchcart.
The visually and hearing impaired elderly woman, Eliza Ncube was walking towards her home. The incident occurred in March along the Silalatshani-Avoca road.
"Accidents involving scotchcarts have of late become prevalent in the province. As police we are saying scotchcarts are equally dangerous hence we continue to urge people to be extra cautious and avoid speeding so that we don't have a recurrence of such incidents in which lives are lost unnecessarily," said the police spokesperson.
