A Plumtree woman accused of killing her 62-year-old mother-in-law yesterday narrated how she menstruated continuously for days after the old woman had stolen her underwear.

Privilege Ncube (27) and her brother Jubiliant Ndlovu (23) of Plumtree's Mlomwe Village allegedly fatally struck the old woman with a knobkerrie on the head over witchcraft accusations.

The pair appeared before Justice Maxwell Takuva at the Bulawayo High Court yesterday and is facing charges of murder with actual intent.

Ndlovu has admitted to committing the crime in connivance with his sister but the latter maintains that she did not take part in the commission of the murder.

The alleged murder occurred on March 1 2014.

When she took to the witness stand yesterday, Ncube alleged that the now deceased, Thoko Dube, stole her panties and photos to perform some acts of witchcraft.

"She took my underwear and I began menstruating continuously. I assumed the constant menstruation was linked to the disappearance of my panties. I even went to churches to seek divine remedy. Each time I met her (the now deceased), I would start menstruating," explained Ncub, who was in tears.

"I do not believe in witchcraft but I believe there was something she did with my underwear. I was bitter. After some days, I found the missing underwear on my bed."

Although Ncube explained that she did not take part in the alleged fatal assault but tried to restrain her sibling, Justice Takuva said there was no rationale in her version.

He queried why she did not scream for help from the neighbours, further querying why she did not immediately report the murder to the police.

"Do you realise if you had acted rationally, you could have saved the deceased's life? If you, screamed continuously, the neighbours could have come to rescue the now deceased. Your conduct is not consistent with an innocent person," said the judge.

The circumstances of the matter are that on March 1 2014 at around 10pm, the accused pair went to the now deceased's house and found her in the company of her two-year- old grandchild.

While inside the hut, Ndlovu suddenly jumped onto the old woman and strangled her.

Ncube allegedly assisted her brother by pressing her grandmother's legs to the ground while holding her hands.

Ndlovu then took a knobkerrie and fatally struck the now deceased three times on the head.

The siblings fled the scene and the matter was reported to the police as sudden death, but investigations carried out later revealed it was murder.
