AN 18-YEAR-OLD woman from Nsenmpongo in Binga was on Thursday slapped with 210 hours of community service after she assaulted her 69-year-old grandmother, accusing her of beating up her mother, who has since passed away.
Metrider Muzamba pleaded guilty to the assault charge when she appeared before Binga resident magistrate Stephen Ndlovu.
She accused her grandmother of regularly assaulting her ill mother.
"Why did you beat your grandmother?" asked the magistrate.
"I beat her because she was beating up my ill mother," she answered.
The magistrate would have none of her excuses, indicating that no matter what the circumstances, it was taboo for her to beat up an elderly person.
"It is taboo for young people like you to beat up elderly people, you should not have done that," he said.
"You are, therefore, sentenced to 12 months in jail."
The magistrate suspended six months for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The remaining six months were suspended on condition she performed 210 hours of community service at Manjolo Primary School.
