A Gwanda man told a magistrate he stole money from prominent businessman Ntuseng Moyo because he was starving as Moyo was not paying him a living wage.
Sibangani Bhebhe (23) of Spitzkop told Reuben Mukavhi that he stole $100 plus R2 900 from Moyo's Injanji Investments where he was employed as a general worker, to buy food for his family.
He allegedly stole the money from Moyo's car, which he had been asked to clean.
Bhebhe said Moyo was paying him $100 a month, which was only enough to cover rates and minor expenses, leaving his family starving.
He told the court he was pained to see Moyo leaving the money in his car as if he had no use for it when he was starving.
He said he returned the money he stole.
Mukavhi sentenced Bhebhe to three months imprisonment which he suspended on condition Bhebhe performed 105hours of community service at the Department of Livestock Production and Development in Gwanda.
Mukavhi said Bhebhe was lucky not to get a custodial sentence, adding he had considered that Bhebhe had not benefited from the offence and that he had already lost his job.
