ABOUT 80 pupils staying at Mbuyazwe High School in Umguza, Matabeleland North were sent home after a number of them suffered from hysteria in a suspected attack from what villagers said were evil spirits.
Some pupils were taken back home unconscious after they first went into a trance-like state, claiming to have been attacked by a black dog.
According to a villager who identified himself as Madlela, a Form Four girl residing at the school experienced a severe headache last Wednesday night.
Other pupils who came in contact with her became hysterical, claiming to have seen a black dog as well.
In a bid to quell the pandemonium that had engulfed the school, teachers and pupils started praying, but one of the praying pupils also went into a "trance".
"One of those pupils who were praying went hysterical. We thought that it was an act of goblins but we were surprised when she started talking in a deep male voice like someone who is demon possessed.
"She said, 'I am black mamba five, I came for her and I won't leave her'. She hissed and spit like a snake, rolling down in a snake like movement," said Madlela.
School authorities had to call parents to take those who were unconscious as they were frothing. The attacks occurred from Wednesday last week until Monday. On Saturday over six children ran amok claiming that an old woman was beating them up.
When B-Metro visited the school, the headmaster, Godwin Sithole, could neither deny nor confirm the shocking incidents as he said he was not around when it happened.
"I was in Bulawayo, I just came today," he said.
However, Ward 8 councillor, Sisa Moyo confirmed the incidents.
"The incidents happened. Apart from the girls, boys were also attacked. One of the boys was roaring and acting violently. Teachers had a hard time controlling him.
"He is reported to have talked like a possessed person saying he wanted to go to Mzilikazi in Bulawayo and said out the address. He resembled someone with ancestral spirits," Moyo said.
She further revealed that they suspected evil spirits were haunting pupils and they have since resolved to call the Evangelical Christian church to exorcise the spirits.
"We don't want tsikamutandas (witch hunters), they are bogus. We have called a church service to exorcise the spirits. As for now all the 80 boarders have been sent back home. The headmaster said they should come back on 25 May," she said.
Bulawayo Provincial education officer Dan Moyo said he was yet to be informed of the incident.
