A man from Matshetsheni in Gwanda tried to grab a grade 2 pupil at Emabilini Mine Amazon Filabusi intending to rape her but she managed to escape and informed her mother.
This was heard by Filabusi Magistrate Mzingaye Moyo when Bekithemba Moyo (18) appeared before him charged with attempted rape.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge but later admitted that he only grabbed her hand and let her go when she had screamed.
The magistrate convicted and sentenced him to six months in jail. Three months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
Prosecutor Smart Tafireyi told the court that on October 30 at 2pm the girl was on her way coming back from school when she met Moyo who grabbed her and tried to remove her undergarments but she managed to escape and told her mother.
Her mother and relatives then tracked down his foot marks and he was later arrested.
