Let's have two surnames for married women
13 Mar 2018 at 15:33hrs | Views
The proposal for married women to also have their maiden surnames included as second names has my vote. Most countries are already doing it, the practice gives a more detailed identity of the new bride. After educating one's daughter to 'dizzy heights', the girl, Engineer Dorothy Mugadza gets married and is now known as Engineer Dorothy Gabarinocheka.
This really is absurd, she now sounds alien and completely detached from the Mugadza family. Her father cannot 'proudly beat his chest' for having an Engineer daughter where his surname is nowhere near the Engineer.
Something like Engineer Dorothy Mugadza Gabarinocheka sounds more identifying and realistic. The proud parents of the girl also want to be identified with their Engineer daughter so they can proudly walk with a spring in their steps.
A woman who remarries after she had been widowed can still add the new surname to those registered as her second names. Marriage is a ceremonial confirmation of the two who have agreed to start a family, its not a commercial transaction.
The two families of the bride and groom have simply expanded and extended their horizons.
Think about it, add that other name, Engineer Dorothy Mugadza Gabarinocheka. Yeah!
