Propaganda and media onslaught used as a tool for regime change

07 Oct 2014 at 10:19hrs | Views

The West has successfully used all forms of media to spread propaganda to effect regime change in many countries. The destabilization of North African countries and Middle Eastern countries including Libya and Egypt were also clearly explained in the international media networks. The CNN, BBC, Sky News, Europe News all 'sang from the same hymn book' on the actual causes of the uprisings in North Africa and Middle East as the 'Arab Spring', lauding the ‘people, peaceful drive for democracy'.

The West threw their weight behind rebels who were described as ‘pro democracy change agents'. The West was quick to condemn the heads of state and their governments as ‘corrupt dictators'. Today these countries and their people suffer the consequences. They find themselves in a daily struggle for survival, not being able to eat ‘democracy or feed themselves'.

Since President Robert Mugabe's land reform programme in 2000,the Western media has painted him as a  ruthless dictator who has murdered his own people to remain in power. Whether this is true, it remains an internal matter and perhaps for the Zimbabweans to assess. What is an issue however is the fact that the Western media has hidden crucial evidence in their reports to why President Mugabe is under heavy siege western governments.

Evidence abounds to demonstrate that the British and Americans have in fact, perfected the use of information, as a' weapon of mass deception'. The lies that were used to justify the invasion of Iraq and the completely false image that has been painted about the situation in Zimbabwe provide ample testimony of this fact. The West's concern for democracy and human rights is applied selectively. Countries that display too much non-conformist independence from the neo-liberal capitalist model are attacked even when there is a functioning multi-party system.

This has witnessed a proliferation of NGOs and a plethora of MDC-linked anti-Zimbabwe websites on the internet. Typical examples include Kubatana.net and Zimnews online. Clandestine radio stations started beaming inter-tribal hate messages and anti-government propaganda into the country's airwaves. These include Voice of the People (VOP), Short Wave Radio African and Studio 7, a VOA proxy, all of which are funded by the Western government-owned NGOs.

It is a valid assessment to conclude that the regime change agents will try by all means to use the media to pursue their vendettas.
