The trial of Highlanders Football Club midfielder Mthulisi Maphosa, who is facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly stabbed a soldier at a social soccer match in Mpopoma last October, is set to open on July 12.
The trial failed to commmence on May 4 as initially scheduled following indications that the complainant, Isaac Mazambane, planned to withdraw the charges.
Maphosa was advised of the new trial date when he briefly appeared before Bulawayo provincial magistrate Richard Ramaboea at Western Commonage Magistrates' Court yesterday.
The former TP Mazembe, Democratic Republic of Congo and FC Platinum player courted trouble for himself when he allegedly stabbed Mazambane in the abdomen following a brawl on October 9 last year.
The incident happened in Mpopoma suburb near Khongo Beer Garden.
Charges against him are that on the day in question, Maphosa drove to Kongo Beer Garden in Mpopoma where Mazambane and his friends were watching a social soccer match.
Maphosa allegedly jumped off his vehicle after it nearly ran over a vendor, and slapped an elderly man standing by accusing him of blocking his way.
Mazambane, who is employed by the Zimbabwe National Army, questioned Maphosa' behaviour and this did go down well with the player. Maphosa rushed to his car and came back armed with a knife.
He allegedly started teasing Mazambane before stabbing him once in the abdomen, severing his intestines.
