Kgadi Mokoma scored a brace as South Africa beat Zimbabwe 4-1 in their Group B encounter at the Maxaquene Stadium, in the All Africa Games Women's tournament.
The South Africans will be delighted by the result considering they have been forced to send a junior squad to these Games as the senior team is in camp for their crucial Olympic Games qualifier against Ethiopia this coming weekend.
South Africa opened the scoring in the 3rd minute when Cathrine Mokhopa scored with a rasping shot after Samantha Skiti lost her marker and set the ball up for the onrushing midfielder to score.
Ten minutes later South Africa doubled their lead through a piece of individual brilliance by Mokoma, who beat two defenders, cut inside from the flank, drew the keeper off her line, before curling her dipping shot into the corner of the goal.
South Africa threatened to run away with the game and could have taken a seemingly unassailable 3-0 lead when Mokhopa's long range effort flashed just wide of the mark a minute later.
Zimbabwe took advantage of Banyana's charity to pull themselves back into the game when Majory Nyamwe scored when she intercepted a weak pass by Souuth Africa defender Sibongiseni Khamlana to score in the 25th minute.
Nyamwe had a chance to even matters, just before the break, but her headed effort was cleared off the line by Chantelle Esau, with the South African keeper Francina Mputle well beaten.
Zimababwe kept the pressure on their opponents early in the second half but could not find an equaliser despite their superior ball possession.
Against the run of play Mokoma scored her second in the 57th minute when Merica Selepe played the ball behind the advancing Zimbabwe defence and the striker ran onto the ball before slipping it neatly past a diving Onai Chinagawo
Zimabwe coach Rosemary Mugudza rung the chances bringing on Rufaro Machingura for Ndlovu and Patience Mujuru for Emmaculate Msipa in an effort to change the game, but it had little effect, and allowed South Africa to close down the midfield and run down the clock through counter attacks.
Skiti wrapped up the scoring in the final minutes when the midfielder headed home a pin-point cross from Nomakhosi Zulu.
In the other Group B match Ghana beat Tanzania 2-1 at Machava Stadium
South Africa will look to build on the three points gained against Tanzania on Thursday, while Zimbabwe will need to lift their spirits ahead of their match with Ghana.
