A birthday party is meant to be a joyous occasion but one that was held by Sylvia Nkomo at her homestead in Khekhethe Village under Chief Manguba in Madlambuzi area in Matebeleland South province turned into a scene of tragedy.
The celebration of life at Nkomo's homestead was replaced by grief when Mark Ncube (18) was fatally stabbed by his uncle Pennywell Ndlovu (19).
This was heard when Pennywell appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware charged with murder.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to 21 December. The magistrate advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.
The State's case as presented by prosecutor Selestine Madziwa is that on 10 November at around 10pm, Pennywell, his nephew the now deceased Mark, Nomthandazo Ncube, Zinhle Moyo, and Reason Ncube were attending a birthday party at Nkomo's homestead.
It is reported that an argument arose between Pennywell and Mark, with Mark accusing Pennywell of stealing his hen.
Pennywell became angry and grabbed Mark by the collar and dragged him for about 90 metres outside Nkomo's yard.
Sensing danger Mark reportedly started asking for forgiveness from Pennywell.
In a fit of anger Pennywell drew an okapi knife from his right back pocket and stabbed Mark twice in the head and once in the neck.
Mark reportedly fell on the ground and started bleeding from the stab wounds and Pennywell ran away from the scene.
Mark was taken to Lady Stanley Hospital by his cousin Reason and other villagers.
Upon arrival at the hospital he was attended to before he was referred to Plumtree District Hospital where he later died at around 9am.
The matter was reported to the police and investigations led to Pennywell's arrest.
