A taxi driver from City Rollers was on Saturday night allegedly robbed of US$35 and a cell phone at gunpoint.

The driver was hired by a man who asked to be taken to Kingsdale suburb. Upon reaching his destination at about 10.30pm, the robber allegedly produced a gun and demanded money from the driver.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident.

"I can confirm that we received a report of a taxi driver who was hired by a man to take him to Kingsdale. On arrival the man pulled out a gun and demanded money from the driver," said Insp Moyo.

"The man then took the car keys from the driver and walked away. He, however, threw the keys back to the driver after walking a distance."

Another taxi driver was assaulted with a hammer on the head before being robbed of the vehicle, a Mazda Demio model, a cell phone and some cash.

"The vehicle was recovered two days later in Plumtree being driven by the third suspect. Police received a tip off from members of the public and the three were arrested for robbery and assault. They would appear in court soon."

The three suspects are Absalom Xaba (20), Bhekinkosi Xaba (18) and Proud Ncube (24).
