'Sikhala not a political prisoner'

The Zimbabwe Government has refuted claims that former CCC activist Mr. Job Sikhala is a political prisoner, dismissing such assertions as false and malicious.
In a statement released last night, Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere stated that Mr. Sikhala's arrest was justified, as he had incited violence and previously breached bail conditions.
Dr. Muswere responded to Mr. Sikhala's allegations of persecution by the Government during the Geneva Human Rights and Democracy Summit in Switzerland last week, labeling them as fictitious and fallacious.
"It must be emphasized that Zimbabwe upholds democracy and human rights with utmost respect and adherence to the rule of law," he asserted.
The Minister emphasized that in Zimbabwe, nobody is exempt from the law, regardless of their political affiliation. He cited Mr. Sikhala's arrest based on criminal activities, including incitement of public violence and disorder, as well as repeated violations of bail conditions.
"His portrayal of Zimbabwe's political situation is entirely false. His criminal activities warranted legal action, demonstrating the impartiality and independence of the judiciary," Dr. Muswere explained.
He highlighted that the true victims of human rights violations are those affected by Western-imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe, urging attention to be directed towards their plight.
"Focus should be on the millions impacted by these illegal sanctions," he concluded.
