Former Bindura magistrate Edith Kakuruwo and her co-accused, Elvis Muzavazi, appeared at the Bindura Magistrates' Court facing charges of defrauding a businessman of over US$3,000 by allegedly misusing Senator James Makamba's name and a residential stand agreement of sale.
Kakuruwo, a resident of Chiwaridzo, and Muzavazi, aged 58 from Mupandenyama, were both employed by Thurlow and Company, a firm owned by Dr. Makamba. The case, presented by prosecutor Mrs. Getrude Mayenyeso before Provincial Magistrate Mr. Tinashe Ndokera, alleges that Kakuruwo and Muzavazi collaborated with an accomplice, Florence Makubaza, who is currently at large, to deceive Bindura shop owner Robson Mabhengo, aged 45.
According to court details, Kakuruwo, then an administrator at Thurlow and Company, received an agreement of sale for stand number 2260 in CBD Bindura from Dr. Makamba on November 28, 2022. On January 7, 2023, Kakuruwo and Muzavazi allegedly approached Mabhengo with Makubaza, claiming they were authorized by Dr. Makamba to borrow US$3,380, offering the agreement of sale as collateral. Mabhengo agreed to the arrangement and handed over the money.
Months later, in April, Mabhengo sought to discuss the overdue repayment with Dr. Makamba but was reportedly denied access by the accused. When he eventually reached Dr. Makamba in May, Makamba denied any involvement, stating he had not authorized anyone to borrow money on his behalf.
Realizing he had been duped, Mabhengo reported the matter to the police, leading to Kakuruwo and Muzavazi's court appearance.
