ZAPU launches new grassroots engagement plan

ZAPU has announced a renewed political strategy focused on direct engagement with people at the grassroots level, emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing Zimbabwe's current socio-political and economic crisis.
This announcement was made by ZAPU leader Sibangilizwe Nkomo, who reasserted his party's commitment to grassroots engagement as a means to reconnect with communities, build a mass movement, and encourage national dialogue on resolving Zimbabwe's challenges.
Nkomo urged Zimbabweans to unite against what he described as the oppressive Zanu-PF regime, highlighting the critical juncture the nation faces in its history.
"In ZAPU, we have chosen our path. We are returning to the grassroots, engaging directly with the masses. We are building a mass movement, reconnecting with communities, and fostering national dialogue," Nkomo said.
"Our cadres will provide leadership in town hall and village meetings alike. We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with workers, advocating for their rights within trade unions. In every tertiary institution, our Youth Front will actively participate in student representative councils to champion the rights and aspirations of students."
The ZAPU leader criticized the monopolization of political and economic power by the ruling elite, asserting that the public sphere must remain inclusive and democratic.
"The public sphere belongs to the people and cannot be monopolized by the ruling elites. Ironically, those who once paid lip service to the mantra that ‘the voice of the people is the voice of God' are now actively working to stifle any dissenting voice," he said.
Nkomo called on progressive political parties, civil society organizations, and individuals to unite with ZAPU in building a united front against what he described as an oppressive and corrupt regime.
"Join us in our call for a united front against the oppressive and corrupt Zanu-PF regime," Nkomo urged. "Only when we are united, led by a people-driven ZAPU, can we build the Zimbabwe we want. The journey ahead will not be easy, but it is one we must undertake with determination and unity."
He emphasized that Zimbabwe stands at a crossroads, where collective action or inaction will determine the country's destiny.
"Now is the time for courageous leadership, bold ideas, and unwavering commitment to the ideals that have always defined ZAPU. It is time for ZAPU to lead once again with elected representatives who will not be recklessly recalled at the behest of a captured opposition," Nkomo said.
"The will of the people through elections must never be reversed by a compromised cabal serving as an appendage of the ruling elites. Together, we can chart a new course for Zimbabwe, one rooted in justice, equity, and opportunity for all."
Nkomo expressed disappointment with certain opposition figures whom he accused of enabling the Zanu-PF administration to consolidate power, describing such actions as a betrayal of the people's aspirations.
"Those who grabbed power by devious means have disappointed the masses after being given the people's trust through votes," he said, criticizing opposition politicians for becoming "opposition enablers" of Zanu-PF's 2030 agenda.
"Nonetheless, our own economic collapse and its attendant humanitarian crisis resemble a virtual warzone. It is disheartening to witness some who don the colors of opposition working to extend the term of the current administration, shredding Zimbabwe's constitution and betraying the people's aspirations."
Nkomo concluded with a rallying call for unity, urging Zimbabweans to join ZAPU in pursuing the vision of a fair and just society rooted in equality, opportunity, and the rule of law.
"At this critical political juncture, I call upon all Zimbabweans who believe in social justice, freedom of expression, and human rights to join hands with us," he said.
"Let us unite to build a society where equality under the law is not just a principle but a lived reality… The journey ahead requires courage, resilience, and unity. Let us rise to the challenge and fulfill the promise of our great nation."
