President Emmerson Mnangagwa has paid tribute to veteran liberation fighter and former Manicaland Governor, Tinaye Elisha Nzirasha Chigudu, describing him as a "principled cadre" whose unwavering commitment to Zimbabwe's independence and governance left an indelible mark on the nation.
In a statement following Chigudu's passing, President Mnangagwa expressed profound sorrow, commending the late hero's role in the liberation struggle and his dedication to the ruling Zanu-PF party and the Government.
"I received with deep sorrow and sadness, news of the untimely death of Tinaye Elisha Nzirasha Chigudu, a veteran of our liberation struggle," said President Mnangagwa. "He was among the brave sons and daughters of the soil who took a stand and fought for the Independence of Zimbabwe."
Chigudu, one of the earliest combatants trained under the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZPRA) in North Korea, played a pivotal role in intelligence operations during the liberation struggle. Operating in Salisbury (now Harare), his work provided critical insights into Rhodesian military tactics, significantly aiding guerrilla warfare efforts.
Despite his capture and a 12-year imprisonment by the colonial regime, Chigudu's resolve remained unshaken. Upon his release, he returned to the liberation struggle, continuing the fight for Zimbabwe's independence.
President Mnangagwa also highlighted Chigudu's contributions in the post-independence era, where he served both the Government and Zanu-PF with distinction.
"He was a fountain of wisdom who offered wise counsel and advice in conducting both Party and Government business, drawing from his vast experiences," the President noted.
In recognition of his immense contributions during and after the liberation struggle, the Zanu-PF Politburo has conferred National Hero status on Chigudu. This honor ensures he will be laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, a site reserved for Zimbabwe's most distinguished liberation figures.
"On behalf of the Party, Zanu-PF, Government, my family, and on my behalf, I wish to express my deepest, heartfelt condolences to the Chigudu Family on this sad loss. May the family derive comfort from the contribution he made to this Great Nation," said President Mnangagwa.
Chigudu's passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Zimbabwe's history. However, his legacy of resilience, patriotism, and service to the nation will endure, inspiring future generations.
