The Special High Court Circuit in Gweru has sentenced two men from Kwekwe, Midlands province, to 25 years in prison each for the murder of a man who tried to stop them from assaulting another individual.

The convicts, Obey Mtombeni (29) and Prosper Honye (24), were found guilty of fatally stabbing Blessing Muza on December 3, 2022, at Mbizo Inn Club in Kwekwe. The court, part of the Midlands Special High Court Circuit, is tasked with handling the province's high volume of murder cases, with judges stationed in Gweru and Gokwe.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Muza was at the club with his brothers when he stepped outside to relieve himself. He encountered Mtombeni and Honye assaulting another man, Tinotenda Nyama.

Muza attempted to intervene, but the assailants turned on him, attacking him with clenched fists before stabbing him in the chest. Despite managing to flee and alert his brothers, Muza succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the hospital.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the NPAZ highlighted the seriousness of the crime and reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing justice in murder cases.

In a separate incident, the Chiredzi magistrates' court sentenced 62-year-old John Manyere from Triangle, Masvingo province, to two years in prison for culpable homicide. Manyere, a loss control officer employed by Tongaat Hulett, was convicted for his role in a case involving unintended death.

The two rulings underscore the judiciary's efforts to address violent crimes and ensure accountability for perpetrators across Zimbabwe.
