Residents of Gokwe Town have been left in shock following the arrest of a 33-year-old woman accused of assaulting a 10-year-old girl and allegedly draining her blood in a chilling incident that has sparked fear and outrage in the Midlands community.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the arrest of Mavis Sibanda, a clothing vendor operating at Gokwe Centre, in connection with the bizarre and disturbing allegations. The incident occurred on the morning of May 26, 2025.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the case, which he said is currently under intense investigation.
"Zimbabwe Republic Police arrested a 33-year-old woman on allegations of assault involving the draining of blood from a 10-year-old juvenile. The case occurred in Gokwe Town on 26 May 2025 at about 10 am," said Insp Mahoko.
According to police, Sibanda allegedly called out to the young girl, who was passing by her stall at the marketplace. In a shocking turn of events, she reportedly used a syringe to extract blood from the child after injecting her with a needle.
"The suspect is said to have drawn blood that filled a syringe," said Insp Mahoko. "She was immediately taken into custody and is currently being held by police as investigations continue."
The motives behind the act remain unclear, but the nature of the allegations has raised alarm among residents and drawn widespread attention. The girl's current condition was not immediately disclosed, and authorities have yet to confirm whether she required medical treatment following the ordeal.
Meanwhile, community members have expressed fear and disbelief, calling for swift justice and greater protection for children in public spaces.
"This is terrifying. We send our kids to town thinking they're safe, and something like this happens," said a local parent. "We need answers."
Police say further details will be released as the investigation progresses. Sibanda is expected to appear in court soon, facing charges related to assault and possible violations of medical or criminal laws.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, and to report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement.
