President Emmerson Mnangagwa has announced a month-long national firearms amnesty, giving members of the public the opportunity to voluntarily surrender unregistered firearms and ammunition without facing criminal charges.

The amnesty, running from September 24 to October 24, 2025, allows individuals and institutions holding unlicensed or illegally acquired firearms to hand them over at their nearest Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) stations.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the initiative was prompted by a rise in crimes involving unlicensed firearms, including armed robbery and murder. He added that some licensed firearm holders have failed to update their records or secure their guns properly, contributing to theft and misuse.

"The amnesty follows observed trends of firearms misuse linked to unlicensed and unauthorised possession," Nyathi said. "Those who comply will not face prosecution and will receive an official safe custody receipt."

The amnesty also targets firearms held by companies that have closed, inactive gun club members, or individuals who inherited firearms without updating ownership records. Licensed gun dealers and clubs holding unclaimed firearms in violation of the Firearms Act are also urged to comply.

Nyathi called on all licensed firearm owners to update their records in line with the Firearms Act, Chapter 10:09, and urged the public to take advantage of the amnesty to regularise firearms possession and ownership.
