Prominent investigative journalist Hopewell Chin'ono has issued a stark warning to Zimbabwe's political elite, urging them to reflect on the fate of former President Robert Mugabe's sons - who now face arrest and public humiliation following the fall of their father's regime.
Posting on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Chin'ono shared an image of Robert Mugabe Jr in handcuffs and prison garb, following his arrest for drug possession.
"This is Robert Mugabe Jr wearing khaki prison uniform after being arrested in possession of drugs. You all know that if Robert Mugabe Sr was still in power today, this would not have happened," Chin'ono wrote.
He argued that during Mugabe's presidency, crimes committed by his children and close allies were routinely ignored, shielded by the power and privilege of his office.
"It is the same story we see today. If Sean or Collins Mnangagwa, or E.D. Jr commit crimes, they will not be arrested while their father remains in office. But once their father is no longer in power, the protection disappears and the same law that they once evaded will come after them," he posted.
Chin'ono suggested that this fear of future vulnerability is why President Emmerson Mnangagwa is determined to handpick his successor—someone who will protect his family and allies from legal consequences.
"Power is temporary. As time moves, circumstances change, and the grip on power inevitably weakens. When it is loosened, those once untouchable become like everyone else - what they call povo in Mozambique, the ordinary people. That is what Robert Mugabe Jr has now become," he said.
He added that Mugabe Jr now sleeps in the same dilapidated prison cells his father refused to refurbish—facilities once criticised as symbols of state neglect.
"Yes, he will probably get bail today or tomorrow. But the humiliation he has already endured is a powerful lesson for every politician. Power is fleeting, corruption always catches up, and one day even your own children will face the very consequences you once ignored," Chin'ono concluded.
