Zimbabwe concluded the 25th International Civil Aviation Negotiation Event (ICAN) on Friday by endorsing several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) aimed at further liberalising its airspace and attracting new players in the aviation sector.
The high-level event, hosted by Junta de Aviacion Civil (JAC) in Punta Cana, is the premier global forum for ICAO Member States to conduct bilateral, regional, and plurilateral air services negotiations and consultations. The agreements reached are expected to enhance air connectivity, industry growth, and regulatory frameworks for international air transport.
Transport and Infrastructure Development Permanent Secretary Joy Makumbe confirmed that Zimbabwe signed four MoUs and three bilateral agreements during the event.
"As the foremost global platform for air transport negotiations, ICAN allows countries to discuss and agree on air services matters in line with the sector's rapid developments," said Makumbe. "Concluding air services agreements brings benefits such as increased connectivity, economic growth, and a more competitive market."
She added that the agreements would facilitate more routes, flights, and capacity, which could lead to lower airfreight prices, faster transportation, and boosted tourism, while also supporting trade, business activity, and job creation.
The event included negotiation meetings between national delegations, business-to-business sessions, and a high-level roundtable on the future of international air transport. Countries such as Nigeria and Qatar led their respective delegations, highlighting the event's global significance.
The next edition, ICAN 2026, is scheduled to take place in Equatorial Guinea.
