BINDURA - In a dramatic turn of events, a suspected drug peddler was saved at the eleventh hour by government lawyers from the Legal Aid Directorate, after initially pleading guilty to possession of dagga.

Dean Nyamhunga appeared before a Bindura magistrate on 4 December, charged with drug peddling after police found him in possession of 1.8 kilograms of dagga. He was remanded to 5 December for sentencing.

However, Nyamhunga later secured legal representation from the Directorate and altered his plea to not guilty. The matter has since been remanded to 18 December for trial.

The state, led by Chipo Chinoda, alleged that on 2 December, police received a tip-off that Nyamhunga was in possession of dagga. He was apprehended and a search of his Monarch bag revealed the stash, including 1.8 kilograms of dagga.

The case has raised eyebrows, with observers noting the irony of government lawyers representing drug suspects at a time when authorities are intensifying efforts to combat drug abuse nationwide.
