Cris Mtungwazi has been elected the new chairperson of the ZIFA Southern Region following a weekend vote that saw him defeat three contenders for the top post.
Mtungwazi secured nine votes to claim the chair, beating former Warriors and Highlanders striker Zenzo Moyo, who received four votes. Former chairperson Lloyd Munhanga garnered one vote, while Tawanda Tali finished with two.
In the vice-chairperson race, Tafadzwa Mutowa emerged victorious with 13 votes. Martin Mhlanga came second with three, while Elton Sinyosi received no votes. One ballot was rejected as spoilt.
Speaking after his election, Mtungwazi pledged to prioritise youth development and grassroots structures, saying the region's future success depends on nurturing young talent.
"We will prioritise the development of junior football. Our youth are the foundation of our future success. We will invest in grassroots programmes, training facilities and coaching education to ensure our young talent is nurtured, empowered and given every opportunity to excel," he said.
Mtungwazi's election marks the beginning of a new term for the Southern Region as it seeks to rebuild and strengthen football structures across the provinces.
