A Kwekwe man has been remanded in custody after he allegedly poured sulphuric acid on his wife's face during a domestic dispute, a case that has sparked outrage as Zimbabwe observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
Shakemore Manyepa, 30, appeared before the Kwekwe Magistrates Court following his arrest on November 26. According to a statement from the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Manyepa arrived home intoxicated at around 7.30pm before allegedly burning groceries he had purchased for his household.
"When his wife confronted him about the issue, the disagreement escalated and the offender allegedly poured sulphuric acid on his wife's face," the NPAZ said.
The woman was rushed to hospital for emergency medical treatment, while neighbours reported the incident to the police, leading to Manyepa's arrest.
The NPAZ used the case to highlight the urgent need to curb domestic violence, particularly during the international 16-day campaign dedicated to raising awareness on gender-based abuse.
"The NPAZ strongly urges communities to refrain from gender-based violence. We advocate for peaceful and legal resolution of conflicts," the prosecuting authority said.
As authorities push for action against perpetrators and communities call for preventive measures, the case stands as another reminder of the growing threat of domestic violence and the need for stronger collective efforts to protect victims.
