EcoCash has issued a warning to customers following a surge in scams involving fake promotions, bargain deals, quick loans, and other online offers. The mobile money service said fraudsters are tricking users into sharing their EcoCash PINs or One-Time Passwords (OTPs), allowing unauthorised access to wallets and the theft of funds.
"EcoCash is aware of scammers targeting unsuspecting customers through fake promotions, cheap deals, quick loans and ‘too-good-to-be-true' online offers that require payment using EcoCash," the company said in a statement. "In most cases, these scammers trick customers into sharing their EcoCash PIN or One-Time Password (OTP). Once this information is disclosed, fraudsters gain unauthorised access to the customer's EcoCash wallet and steal their funds."
EcoCash advised customers to protect themselves by never sharing their PIN or OTP with anyone, emphasising that the company will never request such information. Users were also warned against clicking on links from unverified promotions or loan schemes circulating on social media, SMS, or other digital platforms.
"Be cautious of websites or messages using fake EcoCash logos or claiming to be ‘powered by EcoCash'," the statement said. "EcoCash will never ask you to transfer funds to another account or wallet for 'safe keeping'. These scams are malicious and designed to defraud customers."
The service urged users to stay alert and, when in doubt, to contact EcoCash through official customer support channels, including Facebook, X, 114, or by visiting the nearest EcoCash service centre.
