POLICE have arrested Phenius Kasuso (36) following a tragic incident in which he allegedly ran over his father with a commuter omnibus after a family dispute linked to the death of his younger brother.
The incident occurred on January 18 at Chief Chirinda's area in the Maramba region.
According to police, the dispute stemmed from the death of Phenius's 17-year-old brother from Aviline Mine in Bindura in September 2025. The deceased's father, Jona Kasuso (58), reportedly suspected that Phenius and two other family members were involved in witchcraft and sought the intervention of Chief Chirinda to resolve the matter.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, saying misunderstandings within the family escalated into violence.
"Jona Kasuso reported the matter at Chief Chirinda's court and it was scheduled for a hearing on January 18, 2026," said Comm Nyathi.
He said the Kasuso family arrived at the traditional court at around 8am on the day of the hearing, where tensions flared after Phenius reportedly refused advice to consult a local prophet.
"An altercation arose between Phenius and the rest of the family members," said Comm Nyathi.
Police allege that Phenius then rushed to his parked Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus and, during the ensuing chaos, drove the vehicle forward, striking his father and causing serious injuries.
Comm Nyathi further alleged that Phenius produced a pistol and threatened family members, forcing them to flee the scene.
"As he attempted to leave, Jona Kasuso and another relative, Rebecca Kasuso, stood in front of the vehicle in an effort to stop him. He allegedly accelerated and struck Jona before fleeing," said Comm Nyathi.
Jona Kasuso sustained multiple injuries, including a fractured left leg, head bruises and a broken rib. He was rushed to Mutawatawa District Hospital, where his condition was reported to be serious.
A report was filed at ZRP Mutawatawa, leading to the arrest of Phenius Kasuso.
Comm Nyathi urged families to resolve disputes peacefully.
"This tragic incident highlights the importance of addressing family conflicts without resorting to violence," he said.
Investigations are continuing.
