Prominent Zimbabwean businessman Mutumwa Mawere will be laid to rest on Monday morning at Fourways Memorial Park Cemetery in Johannesburg, following a ruling by the Johannesburg High Court that settled a family dispute over his final resting place.
Mawere (66), a South African citizen, died in Johannesburg on January 15 from complications related to a stroke he suffered in 2024.
His burial plans had been delayed by a legal disagreement between members of his paternal and maternal families. Sources close to the matter said the dispute pitted representatives of the Mawere family, who preferred that his remains be repatriated to Zimbabwe, against Ms Irene Machiri, who represented the maternal side and supported burial in South Africa.
As tensions escalated, the matter was taken to court. On Thursday, the Johannesburg High Court ruled that Mawere should be buried in South Africa, clearing the way for funeral arrangements to proceed in Johannesburg. The burial had initially been scheduled for Friday but was postponed to Monday pending the court's decision.
Speaking on behalf of Zororo-Phumulani, the funeral services company handling the arrangements, chief executive officer Oliver Mufudze said the firm was working closely with the family to ensure a dignified send-off.
"Our role is to serve the family with dignity, sensitivity and respect during this difficult time," Mufudze said. "We are working closely with the family to ensure that Mr Mawere is laid to rest in a manner that honours his life and reflects the many lives touched by his generosity."
He added that Zororo-Phumulani's logistics team was already on the ground in Johannesburg, working around the clock to deliver a seamless service in line with the agreed arrangements.
Mawere was a towering figure in Zimbabwean and South African business circles, with interests spanning mining, manufacturing and banking. Educated in Zimbabwe, Eswatini, the United Kingdom and the United States, he held a BSc in Economics, an MSc in Management, and an MBA in Finance and Investments, along with several professional certifications.
