As Highlanders FC marks its centenary this year, the historic football club is set to receive a brand-new team bus, reinforcing its legacy while sparking debate among supporters over the influence of its benefactor.
Vice President Kembo Mohadi is scheduled to officially hand over the 75-seater Higer bus, donated by controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo. The gift comes alongside a US$300,000 cash injection intended to bolster the team's preparations for the season.
Chivayo's increasing prominence at Bosso has divided opinion among fans. Some question the motives of the Zanu PF-linked businessman and the degree of his involvement in club affairs. The controversy escalated recently when Highlanders reversed the appointment of South African coach Thabo Senong, instead naming former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari as head coach—a decision widely attributed to Chivayo's recommendation.
Chivayo, however, has dismissed claims that he is seeking to take over the club, insisting his role is simply to support Highlanders as a committed fan.
The new, luxuriously fitted bus represents a major upgrade from the club's previous vehicle, donated by Nyaradzo Funeral Assurance in 2015, and is expected to enhance travel comfort and security for players and staff during domestic and regional fixtures.
As Highlanders enters its second century, the combination of financial support, improved infrastructure, and renewed focus on team management signals a promising new chapter for Zimbabwe's oldest football club.
