Mario's treatment of Munetsi compared to witchcraft

Social media erupted with criticism after Mario Marinica announced the latest Zimbabwe national football team squad for the Four Nations tournament in Botswana, once again leaving out vice-captain Marshall Munetsi.

The midfielder, who plays for Paris FC after moving on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, was previously omitted from the Warriors squad for the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco. At the time, Marinica said he did not want to risk including a player who was believed to be injured.

Munetsi had insisted he was fit to represent Zimbabwe and suggested his club situation at Wolves may have contributed to his lack of playing time, as the English side was reportedly considering a transfer during the European winter window. Shortly after the transfer window opened, he joined Paris FC, where he has since impressed, scoring in his last three matches.

His continued absence from the national team has drawn criticism from fans, particularly given his recent form. Many supporters argue that Munetsi and fellow Zimbabwean international Tawanda Maswanhise are currently among the best-performing Zimbabwean players abroad.

Maswanhise, who plays for Motherwell FC, has been included in the squad for the Botswana trip. The forward had previously struggled to secure a regular place under Marinica during the AFCON finals but delivered a standout performance in Zimbabwe's final group match against South Africa national football team.

Following the squad announcement, calls for an explanation intensified after the Zimbabwe Football Association published the squad list without providing reasons for Munetsi's exclusion. Unlike many national team announcements made through media briefings, the squad was released online without a press conference.

Adding to the debate, a man believed to be the player's brother, Moreboys Munetsi, urged the midfielder on social media to consider retiring from international football and focus on his club career.

Supporters have since taken to social media demanding "Justice for Munetsi," questioning why the Warriors vice-captain — who has also captained the national side on several occasions — continues to be overlooked despite strong performances at club level.

While Marinica has the authority to select players he believes are best suited for the team, critics say the lack of explanation has fueled speculation and conspiracy theories around the decision.

The controversy comes as Zimbabwe prepares to compete in the Four Nations tournament in Botswana, with fans hoping the Warriors will deliver positive results despite the ongoing debate over the squad selection.
