What began as a routine journey from Chipinge to Gweru turned into a dramatic and heartwarming moment when 33-year-old Kumbirai Magoso gave birth to a baby boy aboard an Inter Africa bus.

The unexpected delivery occurred on Wednesday afternoon while the bus was parked at Redan Service Station at Nyika Growth Point in Bikita. Magoso, who had shown no prior signs of labour, suddenly went into labour shortly after re-boarding the bus.

A fellow passenger, Faith Mabika Chinheva, stepped in to assist with the delivery despite having no prior experience.

"I was seated opposite her when she started making unusual movements. When I asked, she said the baby was coming out. I immediately alerted the driver and conductor and asked for a blanket from other passengers," Chinheva recounted.

She instructed Magoso to lie down in the aisle and guided her through the delivery process.

"I don't even know how I gathered the courage, as it was my first time helping someone give birth. I thank God everything went well," she said.

The bus conductor, Justice Matya, confirmed the unusual incident, describing it as both shocking and remarkable.

After the successful delivery, Magoso and her newborn — a healthy 2.8kg baby boy — were rushed to Nyika Clinic in a hired vehicle, while the bus continued its journey.

Speaking from the clinic, where she remained under observation, Magoso expressed joy and gratitude.

"I am full of joy… I didn't even know I was due. I had no signs or symptoms. It came as a big shock, but I delivered without complications," she said.

The newborn has since been affectionately nicknamed "Inter Africa" by clinic staff and well-wishers, in honour of the bus on which he was born.

Magoso, a mother of four from Muradzikwa Village in Mt Selinda under Chief Mapungwana, said she had been travelling back to Gweru after attending a family funeral in Chipinge.

She revealed that this was not her first unusual childbirth experience, recalling that one of her children was also born on the roadside while en route to hospital.

"I boarded the bus with no sign of labour pains. I even got off during the stop. But as soon as I got back on, everything happened very fast," she said.

Magoso attributed the safe delivery to her faith as a member of the Masowe Echishanu Church and praised the kindness of fellow passengers and bus staff during the ordeal.

Meanwhile, well-wishers including Grace Chibaya commended the professionalism of medical staff at Nyika Clinic, who are expected to discharge mother and child once they are fully stable.

The remarkable birth has since captured the imagination of many, turning an ordinary bus trip into a story of courage, community and new life.
