Philip Chiyangwa has urged empowerment graduates to move away from relying on formal employment and instead become entrepreneurs capable of creating jobs and stimulating local economic growth.

Speaking as guest of honour at The Tonganyika Trust graduation ceremony in Chinhoyi, where 273 graduates received certificates, Dr Chiyangwa said successful economies are built on strong entrepreneurship and innovation.

The graduates completed vocational training programmes in professional driving, catering, baking, detergent production, Information and Communication Technology, solar installation, electrical wiring, welding and metal fabrication. The initiative was organised with support from Prisca Mupfumira, Zanu-PF members and the Trust's national coordinator Mr Forward Gonese.

The Trust was founded by Tongai Mnangagwa and is focused on providing practical vocational skills aimed at self-employment and community empowerment.

Dr Chiyangwa encouraged graduates to identify challenges within their communities and use their newly acquired skills to provide solutions and build businesses. He also urged them to form syndicates and small-to-medium enterprises to pool resources and compete for larger business opportunities within Mashonaland West Province.

He praised the graduates for developing specialised skills capable of addressing local supply shortages and reducing dependence on goods sourced from outside the province. Dr Chiyangwa further pledged support for startups through access to warehouse and factory infrastructure, financial assistance and market access to help scale products for local and export markets.

The programme aligns with Zimbabwe's Vision 2030 agenda, which seeks to promote industrialisation, human capital development and inclusive economic growth. Organisers said the initiative also aims to reduce unemployment and curb drug and substance abuse among youths by promoting economic participation and self-reliance.

Local leaders at the event commended the Trust for expanding access to professional training opportunities for underprivileged residents and helping communities develop practical economic skills under the principle of "leaving no one and no place behind."
