Zimbabwe 0 - 2 Nigeria
KAITANO Tembo's tenure as interim Zimbabwe national team coach began on a disappointing note after the Warriors suffered a 2–0 defeat to Nigeria in the Unity Cup semi-final at the Valley Stadium last night.
Tembo used the fixture as an opportunity to experiment, handing debuts to five players as part of a broader rebuilding plan ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. However, the experimental line-up struggled to contain a more clinical Nigerian side that capitalised on key moments in the match.
Nigeria forward Femi Azeez proved the difference between the two sides, scoring twice—once early in the first half and again after the break—to send the defending champions into the final at Zimbabwe's expense.
The match carried a strong developmental focus for both teams, with Nigeria also fielding a largely inexperienced squad. Tembo blended fringe players with a handful of experienced campaigners in a bid to assess depth and fitness levels across the squad.
Zimbabwe were punished inside the opening five minutes when Marvelous Nakamba was dispossessed near the edge of the box, allowing Azeez to react quickest and fire low past goalkeeper Future Sibanda.
The Warriors gradually settled and created a promising move in the 17th minute involving Tawanda Chirewa, Jordan Zemura, Marshall Munetsi and Junior Zindoga, but Nigeria's defence cleared before a final shot could be taken. Jonah Fabisch also tested from distance but failed to trouble the goalkeeper.
Nigeria nearly doubled their lead in the 26th minute, but Sibanda produced a sharp save to deny Azeez a second goal before halftime.
After the break, Zimbabwe's best chance came in the 59th minute when Chirewa broke through on the right flank, only to send his effort wide of goal. That miss proved costly, as Nigeria extended their advantage shortly after from a corner routine, with Azeez finishing off a low cross to complete his brace.
Tembo introduced late substitutions in search of a response, but Zimbabwe struggled to create meaningful chances as Nigeria managed the game effectively to secure their place in the final.
While the result was disappointing, the match offered valuable insights for the technical team as Tembo continues his rebuilding process, with several debutants gaining their first exposure at international level.
