POLICE in Mashonaland East Province have impounded more than 200 vehicles in a major operation aimed at restoring order and improving compliance with traffic regulations in Marondera's central business district (CBD).

The crackdown targeted unregistered vehicles, pirate taxis and motorists violating road traffic laws as authorities intensified efforts to decongest the town and enhance road safety.

Officer Commanding Police in Mashonaland East Province, Commissioner Dr Wiklef Makamache, confirmed that a total of 208 vehicles had been impounded during the ongoing operation.

"As police in Mashonaland East Province, we have impounded 208 vehicles in a sweeping operation aimed at restoring order and sanity in the CBD," said Commissioner Dr Makamache.

"This is an ongoing operation involving key stakeholders, including the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA), the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID), the Vehicle Theft Squad and the local authority."

He said the initiative was part of a coordinated multi-agency strategy designed to enforce traffic regulations, improve compliance and create a safer and more orderly environment within the town.

"This was a multi-stakeholder effort to bring back sanity in the CBD. Motorists must adhere to the law, and those who choose to disregard it will face the consequences," he said.

The operation has been widely welcomed by residents and business operators, many of whom say illegal transport operators have contributed significantly to congestion and disorder in the town centre.

A snap survey conducted in Marondera's CBD indicated strong public support for the exercise, with residents describing it as a necessary intervention.

"This operation was long overdue. The CBD had become chaotic and genuine businesses were suffering," said a pedestrian who declined to be named.

Authorities said the impounded vehicles are currently being held at Marondera Police Station, where various agencies are carrying out inspections and verification procedures.

Officials from ZINARA are checking vehicle licensing compliance, while VID inspectors are assessing roadworthiness standards. The Vehicle Theft Squad is verifying ownership details to ensure that stolen vehicles are not operating on public roads.

Local authorities are also conducting assessments to determine compliance with municipal by-laws.

Vehicle owners whose cars have been impounded will be required to settle applicable fines and produce valid documentation before their vehicles can be released.

Police have warned that the operation is ongoing and similar enforcement exercises will be conducted across the province until full compliance is achieved.

The crackdown comes amid broader nationwide efforts by law enforcement agencies and transport authorities to regulate urban transport systems, improve road safety and curb lawlessness on Zimbabwe's roads.

Authorities say sustained enforcement and cooperation from motorists will be critical in ensuring safer, more organised and efficient urban transport networks.
