Defending champions Scottland FC strengthened their bid to retain the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title after securing a crucial 2-0 victory over CAPS United FC at the renovated National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The win saw Scottland move level on points with league leaders Hardrock FC, intensifying an increasingly competitive title race at the halfway stage of the season.

Fans attending the match were among the first to experience the upgraded National Sports Stadium, with electronic turnstiles scanning tickets and supporters taking up designated seats at the revamped 41,000-capacity facility. While renovation works are still ongoing, the stadium's reopening marked a significant milestone for Zimbabwean football.

On the pitch, Scottland wasted little time asserting themselves.

After CAPS United squandered an early opportunity when Ishmael Wadi failed to connect with a dangerous cross from Nyasha Gurende in the opening minute, Scottland struck moments later through veteran forward Knowledge Musona.

Musona finished calmly after being brilliantly set up by Khama Billiat, whose clever back-heel pass unlocked the CAPS United defence.

The champions doubled their advantage shortly afterwards when man-of-the-match Panashe Mutimbanyoka latched onto a well-weighted through ball before slotting past the goalkeeper. CAPS United players protested that Mutimbanyoka may have been offside, but the goal stood.

The two early strikes ultimately proved decisive.

Under assistant coach Ian Bakala, who is temporarily in charge while head coach Takesure Chiragwi is away in England with the Warriors, CAPS United struggled to recover from their sluggish start.

Although the Green Machine enjoyed lengthy spells of possession and controlled much of the territory after falling behind, they failed to convert their dominance into goals.

Takunda Benhura, Chawanangwa Kaonga and Wadi all had opportunities to reduce the deficit but were unable to find the target as Scottland held firm defensively.

Bakala admitted his side's poor start had cost them dearly.

"We lapsed in concentration in the early moments of the game. That pretty much worked against us," he said.

"I thought we would have done better in avoiding those mistakes.

"That was never to be. We live to fight another day. We tried hard to come back into the game but we failed to take advantage of our moments. It's a disappointing defeat."

For Scottland coach Norman Mapeza, the victory was another important step in a tightly contested championship race.

"It wasn't an easy game. We were playing a highly tactical team with quality players," Mapeza said.

"I am happy that we won. But the match was tough."

The result leaves Hardrock, Scottland, Herentals FC and CAPS United all tied on 28 points after 15 matches, with goal difference separating the top four sides in what is shaping up to be one of the closest title races in recent Premier Soccer League history.
