Bus operators report surge in travellers leaving SA for Zimbabwe

South African bus operators have reported a noticeable increase in passengers travelling from South Africa to neighbouring countries, amid growing concerns linked to xenophobic tensions and planned civic action targeting undocumented foreign nationals.

Bus operator Frank Hadebe said passenger volumes on his 65-seater buses have risen sharply in recent weeks, with occupancy increasing from an average of about 20 passengers per trip to as many as 60.

He said the surge includes travellers transporting personal belongings such as refrigerators, couches and other household items, suggesting that some passengers may be relocating rather than undertaking short-term travel.

Hadebe attributed the trend to fears among some foreign nationals following reports of rising xenophobic sentiment and a 30 June deadline issued by certain civic groups calling for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa.

"There's a huge difference in the number of people leaving SA for Zimbabwe since May," Hadebe said. "More people are leaving the country. From an average of 20 people, we are going up to 30, 40 and 50 people per trip."

He added that while some passengers indicate they are returning after temporary travel, others suggest they are leaving South Africa permanently.

Despite the increased outbound movement, Hadebe noted that there remains a steady flow of passengers travelling into South Africa from Zimbabwe, indicating continued cross-border mobility despite heightened tensions.

The developments highlight ongoing sensitivities around migration patterns in the region, particularly between South Africa and neighbouring countries, where economic pressures and social tensions continue to influence travel and settlement decisions.
