Another disturbing case of sexual abuse involving a school authority figure has emerged in Nyanga, Manicaland. A Claremont High School teacher, who was serving as acting deputy headmaster, is on the run after allegedly molesting a 17-year-old Form Three learner at his home.
The accused, identified as Simon Muzerengi, aged around 50, is facing indecent assault charges under Section 67 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23. The incident reportedly took place on June 19, when the learner went to Muzerengi's house to return a cellphone he had earlier given her.
According to a police report, Muzerengi locked the complainant inside his home, professed his “love” for her, and later attempted to fondle her without consent. The victim resisted, but Muzerengi allegedly grabbed her from behind and assaulted her. The ordeal was interrupted when other teachers and learners arrived at the house.
The case was reported to ZRP Nyanga on June 23 under RRB 6850644, and the complainant was referred to Nyanga District Hospital for medical examination. Despite this, Muzerengi has not yet been arrested, and investigations are ongoing.
This scandal follows closely on the heels of another case at St David's Bonda High School, where teacher Anesu Mautsa fled after being caught in a sexual relationship with a female learner. Reliable sources allege that Muzerengi had a history of similar misconduct, with previous cases collapsing before reaching prosecution, raising concerns about systemic protection of offenders within school authorities.
Chief Manicaland Provincial Education Director, Mr Richard Gabaza, stated he was not yet aware of the case and would make inquiries.
The delay in reporting the incident to provincial education offices — more than 10 working days after it occurred — has sparked outrage among parents and child rights advocates, who are demanding accountability and stronger safeguards for learners.
