Road turning out to be a death trap
30 Mar 2016 at 17:14hrs | Views
The road that links Siakobvu and Hurungwe with Gachegache safari area and fishing camps near Lake Kariba is turning out to be a death trap as it is fast losing its form due to erosion and poor workmanship.
Though the road was damaged by rains, there is suspicion of poor workmanship on the road as rock outcrops are emerging from the ground after the top gravel was washed away by rains.
Long stretches of the road, especially on the Matusadonha mountain range are turning into gullies due to poor road drainage system.
At one section of the road, a gully extending from a gorge is threatening to cut across the road, a development that may lead to its closure.
Acting Chief Msampakaruma said transporters are not keen on taking up contracts to ferry grain to hunger stricken communities in the Gachegache area and parts of Makande due to the bad roads.
Kariba legislator, Isaac Mackenzie said several calls have been sounded with responsible authorities to have the road attended to but the Kariba rural district council has not obliged.
Meanwhile, the Karoi-Binga road reduces the distance between Harare and Victoria Falls by 400 kilometres but is not tarred, making it unattractive for motorists to use it.
