ARTUZ to boycott Mnangagwa's Education campaign rally
18 Jul 2018 at 11:11hrs | Views
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education will today 18-07-2018 hold a campaign rally for President Emmerson Mnangagwa at Celebration Center in Harare. The rally is being held under the cover of an education investment indaba. The number of delegates participating and the program however clearly shows that the so called indaba is nothing but a campaign rally where participants have nothing to input.
The campaign rally is being held at a time when teachers were duped by Mnangagwa's government. The government promised a 17, 5% salary increase which they never delivered. They introduced a special allowance whereas the basic salary remained stagnant. An increase in basic salary could have raised other allowances such as rural allowance which are benchmarked on basic salary. Teachers' access to Life Insurance policies, loans and mortgages also depend on the basic salary. The basic salary of teachers is still way below the tax threshold, so the lie being peddled by sister unions claiming that a special allowance keeps salary below tax threshold is both unfounded and malicious. However we can't expect much from these Unions because they have consistently demonstrated that their loyalty is with our employer.
It will be a great betrayal for ARTUZ to attend Mnangagwa's rallies at a time when our members are bitter with his government. The government has presided over the skyrocketing of basic goods and services but still deny its employees a decent wage adjustment.
The military and police seem to have received preferential treatment from the coup government. As a Union we have however submitted our demands which can still be addressed in our absence outlined as follows:
We wish all presidential candidates well as they seek the people's mandate in this year's plebiscite.
