Bulawayo men are too shy to collect condoms from council clinics and are sending their female counterparts to health facilities to collect, a female councilor has said.

According to a council report on Health, in  May a total of 145 600 male condoms  where distributed while only 8 420 females condoms where taken up.

Councillor James Sithole sought clarification on the distribution of condoms as there were more male condoms distributed in clinics   in May.

"Why was the male condom preferred over the female condom as in general, more women visited clinics than males?" asked Sithole.

In response, Councillor Sithabile Mataka-Moyo said most men were shy to collect condoms and therefore sent their female partners to ask for them.

Councillor Monica Lubimbi  said the female condom was unpopular with most couples.

Women preferred the male condom because it was easy to use. There were some cases where males deliberately damaged/opened condoms, reads part of the report.

An Acting Director of Health Services explained  to councilors that female condoms were not popular worldwide.

"It was expensive to produce a female condom. However, efforts were being made to improve the female condom. More educational campaigns would be carried out to promote the use of a female condom," the report added.

The official said  male condom had been in use for a long time and hence had gained acceptance.
