President Emmerson Mnangagwa has departed for Moscow, Russia, to participate in the 80th anniversary celebrations of Victory Day, marking eight decades since Nazi Germany's surrender to the Soviet Union in 1945.

The historic commemorations, scheduled for May 9, will bring together several global leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva, and Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko. The event, held annually in Russia, honours the sacrifices and triumphs of the Soviet people during World War II, known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War.

Mnangagwa's attendance at this year's milestone anniversary underscores Zimbabwe's longstanding ties with Russia, a relationship that has deepened in recent years through increased diplomatic and economic cooperation. His visit is also expected to include bilateral meetings with Russian officials to strengthen trade, energy, and defence partnerships.

Victory Day celebrations will feature a grand military parade in Red Square, a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and cultural performances highlighting Russia's wartime resilience.

The Zimbabwean leader's participation in the commemorations reflects the country's solidarity with nations that played pivotal roles in the Allied victory during World War II, and signals Zimbabwe's intent to align more closely with Eastern powers amid shifting global alliances.

Mnangagwa last visited Moscow in 2019 for bilateral talks. His return for the Victory Day event marks another chapter in Zimbabwe's strategic engagement with Russia on the international stage.

Vice President, General (Rtd), Dr Chiwenga is the Acting President until Mnangagwa's return.
